The band’s journey in January 1969 began with intense pressure to put on a high-concept live show and ended with something wonderfully low-concept: an impromptu lunchtime performance on a London rooftop that reminded the world of the band’s majesty, spontaneity and wit. Jackson’s film is also a volley in one of the longest-running debates in Beatles scholarship. “‘Just for one day, just watch them, and I’ll be really quiet and sit there.’ Well, guess what,” he continues. “‘I wish I could go in a time machine and sit in the corner of the stage while they were working,’” he says, describing a lifelong dream like a child praying for the ultimate Christmas present. “It’s sort of that one impossible fan dream,” Jackson says from Wellington, in New Zealand, where he has spent much of the past four years in a darkened editing suite surrounded by Beatles memorabilia. I had this room full of different tapes where I would write and make strange loops and things like that for the Beatles’ stuff. I was always shy with her, and she was shy, so instead of making love, we went upstairs and made tapes. My ex-wife was away in Italy, and Yoko came to visit me and we took some acid. I was still thinking it was an artistic collaboration, as it were – producer and artist, right? We’d known each other for a couple of years. It wasn’t a sensational idea or anything.Īfter Yoko and I met, I didn’t realise I was in love with her. I couldn’t think of any other way of presenting her. Even before we made this record, I envisioned producing an album of hers and I could see this album cover of her being naked because her work was so pure.
